Witz is a comprehensive lesson plan package that prevents and protects middle school students in South Carolina from becoming radicalized by white supremacist ideas. We hope that through increasing meme literacy and encouraging responsible social media through mentor education, students will be more likely to report and avoid online bigotry.

South Carolina middle school students are spending more time online in light of the pandemic, which isn’t just bad for their eyesight. The Internet is used by alt-right extremists to indoctrinate young, vulnerable audiences and takes the form of memes in online forums. The Witz team has developed a comprehensive lesson plan to encourage middle school teachers to talk with students about online bigotry and meme literacy to intervene before extremism takes root.
